The Common Cold<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A preschool-aged child<\/strong> may experience 3-8 colds per year<\/strong>. Most children fall ill 8-10 times within the first two years of life<\/strong>. The common cold is caused exclusively by viruses<\/strong>, such as rhinoviruses, parainfluenza viruses, coronaviruses, adenoviruses<\/strong>, etc. Over half of all cases are due to rhinovirus serotypes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What Causes the Common Cold?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Rhinovirus was discovered in the 1950s<\/strong>, and even 70 years later, there is no cure or vaccine<\/strong> (due to the many serotypes with different proteins<\/strong>). Only supportive treatments<\/strong> are available to relieve symptoms.<\/p>\n

How Is the Common Cold Transmitted?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Transmission occurs through direct contact between people<\/strong> or via droplets released by coughing, sneezing, or talking<\/strong>. The virus enters our body through the nose or eyes<\/strong> via infected droplets or contaminated hands and objects.<\/p>\n

The incubation period<\/strong> (the time between infection and symptom onset) is typically around 2 days<\/strong>, though symptoms can appear within hours<\/strong> after exposure.<\/p>\n

Why Do We Get More Colds in Cold Weather?<\/strong><\/h3>\n
    \n
  • Cold weather weakens nasal immunity<\/strong>:\n
      \n
    • Reduced mucus production<\/li>\n
    • Reduced circulation of immune cells in nasal blood vessels<\/li>\n
    • The body struggles to fight the virus at its entry point<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Close indoor contact<\/strong> increases transmission.<\/li>\n
    • Dry air<\/strong> allows viruses to survive and spread more easily.<\/li>\n
    • Less sunlight exposure<\/strong> reduces vitamin D production, which is crucial for immunity.<\/li>\n
    • Reduced physical activity<\/strong> lowers immune efficiency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Symptoms of the Common Cold<\/strong><\/h3>\n
        \n
      • Sneezing<\/li>\n
      • Runny nose and congestion<\/li>\n
      • Irritability and fatigue<\/li>\n
      • Headache<\/li>\n
      • Mild fever (<39\u00b0C \/ 102\u00b0F<\/strong>)<\/li>\n
      • Sore throat (with or without a cough)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Symptoms typically last 5-7 days<\/strong>, and always less than 14 days<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Treatment of the Common Cold<\/strong><\/h3>\n

        There is no proven cure<\/strong> for the common cold, and antibiotics do not work<\/strong> because it is caused by viruses, not bacteria<\/strong>. The cold is a self-limiting illness<\/strong>, though complications like ear infections, sinusitis, and pneumonia<\/strong> can occur, which may require antibiotics if bacteria become involved<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Symptom Relief<\/strong><\/h3>\n
          \n
        • Nasal rinses<\/strong> with saline spray<\/li>\n
        • Decongestants<\/strong> for nasal relief<\/li>\n
        • Antihistamines<\/strong> (may reduce runny nose, but studies show mixed results)<\/li>\n
        • Honey<\/strong> (proven to help with cough)<\/li>\n
        • Avoid cough syrups<\/strong> for children under 2 years old<\/li>\n
        • Fever reducers<\/strong> if necessary (paracetamol\/acetaminophen or ibuprofen)<\/li>\n
        • Plenty of fluids and rest<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Prevention<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          • Hand hygiene<\/strong> is the most effective measure.<\/li>\n
          • Vitamin C and echinacea<\/strong> do not have strong evidence for preventing colds.<\/li>\n
          • Vitamin D plays a significant role<\/strong> in immunity, and maintaining good levels helps protect against infections<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
